"Silent Night District"
The "Silent Night District" is located in the centre of the old town, above the pedestrian area. Franz Xaver Gruber was active in the town's parish church from 1835 to 1863 as choir master, hymn singer and organ player. The „Silent Night“ Museum, situated in F.X.Gruber's former home, not only allows a look into the composer's life, but also houses the complete original documentation of the famous Christmas carol, as well as the guitar played by Mohr at the carol's premier.
Franz Xaver Gruber's last resting place is to be found in front of the museum. It is still lovingly cared for today and each year on the 24th December visitors from all over the world descend on Hallein for the traditional „Singen am Grubergrab“ (singing at Gruber's grave).
