Silent Night Museum

An authentic autogramme found in the estate documents of Joseph Mohr in 1996 proved that he wrote the text to the world renown Christmas Carol "Silent Night! Holy Night!" whilst he was active as assistant pastor in Mariapfarr. Therefore it was taken for granted that the parish and pilgrimage church in Mariapfarr should document Joseph Mohr and his carol.
The documentation begins with his family tree showing that his family was resident in Lungau since the 17th century, and ends with his death in 1848 in Wagrain. His Lungau ancestry and his activity as assistant pastor in Mariapfarr from 1815 - 1817 are not the only factors testifying his relationship to the Lungau. His first music teacher, his predecessor in Mariapfarr and Oberndorf and the well-known, artist and priest, Mühlbacher (who created the historical monument in Oberndorf), were also from the Lungau.
The distribution of the carol "Silent Night! Holy Night!" is also generously documented.

The Christmas Crib

The large Christmas Crib in the "Mohr Stube" of the Silent Night Museum is an attraction that everyone wishes to see. Its 100 figures date back to 1750 and decorated the Christmas crib at the time when Joseph Mohr was assistant pastor in Mariapfarr. One can admire these lovingly restored figures in a newly presented Christmas scenery.

The Parish and Pilgrimage Museum, Mariapfarr

The „Unsere Liebe Frau“ Parish Church occupied a special pastoral and historical place in the archbishopric Salzburg. It is Lungau's oldest parish on the one hand and on the other, it has been a place of traditional pilgrimage over hundreds of years, up until the present day.

This clarifies why such a house of God, with so many valuable reliquary, liturgical utensils and votive offerings is to be found in such a geographically isolated place. One can admire these expensive treasures as well as the old silver altar, dated 1443, belonging to the priest Peter Grillinger, in the Parish and Pilgrimage Museum.

The „Scharglerkeusche“

The house belonging to Joseph Mohr's forefathers, called the „Scharglerkeusche“ is located in Stranach, a suburb of Mariapfarr. Mohr's father came from there.
