Silent Night Remembrance  Chapel

The carol "Silent Night! Holy Night!" rang out on Christmas Eve 1818 in the St. Niklaus Church, the boatmans' church, before it began its triumphal march around the world. The Silent Night Memorial Chapel now stands on this place and is an attraction for people from all over the world.

Silent Night and Local History Museum

The museum contains information about the origin and distribution of the carol, as well as the interesting history of the town and its shipping of salt, which is closely interwoven with the text of the carol.

Open daily:  9am - 4pm (Christmas: 9am - 6pm). Guided Silent Night tours are available the whole year through (booking advisable).


Special Silent Night Christmas Post Office
Visitors can send their Christmas mail around the world from here with special Christmas stamps - from Oberndorf, where the first public performance of "Silent Night! Holy Night!" took place.


Silent Night Christmas Market
A small, delightful Christmas market with exquisite handicrafts is situated in the idyllic Silent Night district, directly in front of the Memorial Chapel.
Open: Thursday to Sunday 10am - 8pm

„Music in Advent“ every Advent Saturday and Sunday: 3pm - 4pm (free entrance)


"Silent Night" Commemorative Service

A traditional Silent Night commemorative service is held on Christmas Eve from 5pm - 6pm.  Amongst hymn singing, the two composers of the carol are remembered. There are visitors from all over the world and this creates a very "special" atmosphere.
