Josepf Mohr, songwriter of the Christmas Carol "Silent Night" came to Wagrain as the parish vicar in 1837. He built the elementary school which was later named after him. He grew up in poor surroundings and was, therefore, active for the poor in his parish.  He enjoyed himself as singer and musician in the church choir and also composed. He died on the 4th December 1848 and was buried in the Wagrain cemetery.
